ARE YOU PREPARED FOR A MEDICAL EMERGENCY?
|
First of all, should you even be worried about a medical emergency?
- Do you have one or more medical conditions?
- Are you taking medications on a daily / regular basis?
- Do you have any allergies to medications and/or foods?
- Do you take vitamins and supplements regularly?
- Do you have a living will or have you named a health surrogate?
- Are there people you would like to have contacted if you were involved in a
medical emergency?
- Do you think it's a good idea to be prepared for a medical emergency?
If you answered YES to one or more of these questions, you should consider that getting
yourself prepared for a medical emergency is a good idea. You are managing your
health care, and medical professionals need to know what is going on up to the minute.
You should be taking an active roll in making sure they have access to the most current
and accurate information possible.
Now, let's take a look to see if you are prepared for a medical emergency. Answer
the following questions:
- Do you keep a list of all your current medical conditions and treatments you
are receiving for these conditions?
- Do you have a document that shows all allergies to medication, food, etc.?
- Do you have a document prepared that lists your blood type, height, weight,
age and date of birth?
- Do you have a list of all prescription medications you are taking as needed as
well as on an "as needed" basis?
- Do you have a list of all over the counter medications you take as needed?
- Do you have a list of all vitamins and supplements you are taking on a regular
basis?
- If you have any special needs such as diet, sleeping conditions, fears and
phobias, do you have them listed?
- Do you have a list of your Doctors including names and phone numbers?
- Do you have a hospital you prefer to be treated at and if so, do you have it on
any documents?
- Do you have a list prepared of the people that need to be contacted if you were
involved in a medical emergency? (saved in your cell phone does not count)
- Do you have legal documents such as a living will and/or health surrogate and
if so, do you keep it in a place that is easily accessible?
- Do you keep all of this information together and well organized?
- If yes, do you have a way that ensures all of this information is easily found?
- Do you have multiple copies of all of this information?
- Do you feel you are sufficiently prepared for a medical emergency?
