Kit Keeps Health Info At Hand
By Joe Van Leer, Orlando Forum, Saturday April 5, 2008

When Billy Ward’s father had to be hospitalized for the first of many medical
emergencies three years ago, there was a mad scramble for his medical
information that had to be given to emergency personnel and hospital nursing
staff.

Virgil Ward’s blood pressure dropped precipitously and he was weak, flushed
and sweating and had difficulty breathing.

Already harried, Billy Ward just about went blank when emergency medical
personnel asked him about his father’s medications and conditions, including
any allergies, and his insurance and Medicare information.

“I got bottles of his pills out and I handed them a list of medications from the
Orlando Veteran’s Administration that included meds he didn’t take regularly
or that were important to his situation.”

The process had to be repeated when father and son arrived at the hospital
and Virgil Ward had to be admitted to the emergency room.

“The hospital staff didn’t get the VA list that I had given to the ambulance crew
which was no fault of anyone,” said Ward.  “But here’s the thing, if they don’t
have the right information, mistakes in his care could be made and that scared
me.”

From that frustrating experience, sole caregiver Ward got organized and on
his home computer developed a 911 Prep Kit that includes all medical and
insurance information, saving time and confusion for people who are panicked
by medical emergencies of loved ones.  Consisting of three folders, forms and
instructions, the kit assists users in providing medical, legal and personal
information to emergency medical service personnel and emergency room and
hospital staffs.  Ward is not making a bundle with the 911 Prep Kits, which are
not exactly pricey.  The three different size kits sell for $4.99, $9.99 and
$14.99 and are available at www.911prepkit.com.

“I wanted to make the kits affordable for someone like me who are caregivers
and maybe aren’t working,” explained Ward, whose large prep kit contains four
folders of vial information on his 85-year-old father.

“Sometimes there are special needs like my dad’s fear of suffocation if he
sleeps without his head propped up and that is included in the folders,” said
Ward.

The prep kits were launched a few weeks ago and Ward has sold several so
far.

The second and third larger kits contain forms with more spaces that
caregivers and patients can fill in with more information, especially as their
medical histories grow.

A nurse encouraged Ward to sell the kits to help others.

Ward’s logo is “In an Emergency, Information Saves Lives.”

The forms can be downloaded continually at no charge from the prep kit web
site.  If people don’t have home computers, Ward gives them three copies of
the blank forms that can be copied in libraries, for example.

The next step for Ward is to attend health fairs, county fairs and other venues
to market his new venture.  Eventually, he will contact retail outlets like medical
supply stores and pharmacies to help sell the kits.  Billy Ward is on a waiting
list for someone to come in and care for his father for about four hours while
he markets the kits.

Despite a 73 percent aorta blockage, carotid artery blockages, an irregular
heartbeat, and the onset of mild dementia, World War II veteran Virgil Ward
awakens in a chipper mood, singing “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,” said his
son.  Virgil Ward’s war experiences resulted in two knee replacements, back
problems and some hearing loss.

“My dad is my inspiration,” said Ward, 40, of College Park.  “How can I wake up
in a bad mood after all he’s been through?”

A widower, Virgil Ward was recently hospitalized for pneumonia but this go-
round the crucial information was at his son’s fingertips.

Billy Ward worked in sales for about 20 years but had to five up his job to
become caregiver for his father for the past two years.

During the first year, Ward worried about finances and continued in sales as
an independent contractor.

“But a year ago I decided it’s a blessing to spend time with my father and he
can’t be alone for more than an hour at a time,” he said.  “If I look at it as a
burden, it would be crippling for me.”

The Orlando Veteran’s Administration has treated Virgil Ward with respect and
given him excellent care and treatment, said Billy Ward, who also praised the
staff at Florida Hospital.

So far, Billy Ward has no health issues but if he ever does, he is well-prepared.

“The best thing is that my father helps me put the kits together,” said Ward.
