My name is William Ward, and I am proud to say that I am a caregiver for
my Father. He is 87 years old and a veteran of World War II. Over the
years, my Father has developed numerous medical conditions and takes
several medications on a daily basis. Needless to say, there is a lot of
information to manage. Due to his severe conditions, we live constantly
watchful for medical emergencies.
The first time I had to call 911 was a nightmare. I had some information on
my Father’s conditions and meds but I was not at all prepared for the
Paramedics and EMTs.
When we arrived at the ER, I faced the same questions asked by the
Emergency Responders. I learned that the EMS does not always give the
information to the ER, or it can be misplaced in the chart, even lost. Once
the ER Doctor determined that my Father would be admitted, the same
questions were being asked of me a third time.
As time went on and as we went through more and more 911 calls, I
learned what I could do to help during a medical emergency. I learned that
I could assist these caring medical professionals by being prepared with all
of my Father’s medical and personal information. I learned that this simple
but necessary preparation could expedite emergency medical care as well
as help to avoid critical mistakes.
I found several different tools that would allow me to have some
information ready, but every one of these tools were incomplete. None of
them had space enough to hold all of his information. None of them were
available in multiple-copy format. None of them were laid out in a way that
information was easy to read and use for the medical professionals. There
were some tools that were like books that held a complete medical history,
but none them would be used by emergency responders because they
were too complex, and they were all entirely too expensive. It was as
though all of these things were created for the sake of saying tools were
available, without paying any attention to a real world solution. I decided to
take matters into my own hands and create a complete package that would
be such a solution.
Once my Father's Personal Readiness Package was complete, I realized
many people had to be in this same situation. I came to realize that people
have a responsibility to make sure their medical information is available, so
the best medical decisions can be made and the best care can be given.
After receiving a great deal of encouragement from several Paramedics,
Nurses and Doctors, I created what is now the 911 PREP Kit©™.
The main idea behind the 911 PREP Kit©™ is the form, which was created
with input from a number of medical professionals. There is room to
record up to 20 medical conditions and daily medications as well as ample
room for all medical and personal information. Most importantly, once a
person completes the kit, he/she will have three copies of this form: 1 for
the EMS, 1 for the ER and one for the Admitting nurse if a hospital stay is
necessary. The kit also comes with other essential tools to help a victim or
family members during a medical emergency.
The “911 PREP Kit©” was designed for anyone with chronic medical
conditions (many senior citizens will fit into this category). It is also a great
tool for caregivers, since a caregiver designed it.
